Cost, Payment and Insurance
How much does rehab cost in Kenya?
Costs vary widely depending on whether the centre is public, faith-based or private, the length of stay and the level of medical care. Public and county facilities are cheaper or subsidised, while private residential programmes charge more. Always ask for a written breakdown of what is included.
Does SHA cover rehab?
The Social Health Authority (SHA) has announced it will enhance cover for the treatment and rehabilitation of people affected by substance use. What is covered depends on the facility being SHA-contracted and on the current benefit package. Ask the rehab centre and SHA directly before admission.
Does private insurance cover rehab in Kenya?
Some medical insurance policies cover addiction treatment or mental health care, often with limits or exclusions. Check your policy wording, ask your insurer for pre-authorisation, and ask the rehab centre which insurers it works with.
Are there free rehab centres in Kenya?
Some public facilities and county programmes offer free or subsidised treatment, including public MAT clinics for opioid dependence. The government has also announced plans for a public rehabilitation centre in every county. Call NACADA's free helpline 1192 for referrals to affordable accredited services near you.
Can I pay for rehab by M-Pesa or in instalments?
Many Kenyan centres accept M-Pesa and bank transfers, and some offer deposit and instalment arrangements. Always get receipts for every payment.
What is included in rehab fees?
Fees usually cover accommodation, meals, medical assessment and monitoring, counselling and group therapy, and activities. Medicines, specialist reviews, laboratory tests and aftercare may be charged separately. Ask for a written list of what is and is not included.
Why is cheaper rehab sometimes risky?
Some unaccredited centres keep costs low by having no qualified medical staff, overcrowding, or using force instead of treatment. NACADA has shut down centres for expired medicines, poor hygiene, unsafe buildings and lack of qualified personnel. Check accreditation before paying.
